10 Must Have Kitchen Tips and Tricks: Here are some helpful kitchen tips and tricks that will surely become habits in your kitchen; after-all who doesn’t love saving time and effort. These kitchen tips are so useful, you will wish that you had known these tips a long time ago.
Now as y’all know I spend a lot of time in my kitchen. So much time, that I have a ton of little tips & tricks that I do without even thinking about them. I say this because I never really noticed until last night that is. My sister had my family over for dinner. Now let me tell you, my sister can’t cook so knowing we are coming for dinner I of course arrived a little early….knowing she would need help. Well, bless her heart she tried. She tried to cook, she tried to have everything done at the same time, she tried very hard! However, once she realized that the rolls in the oven weren’t baking because she didn’t turn the oven on…and then she broke her husband’s French press coffee pot because she set the glass on her electric burner…that she didn’t turn off…..yeah… it was that kind of dinner! The glass French press shattered and let me tell you I had no idea glass could fly that far! It was everywhere!
Anyhow, as I sat there watching her I realized there are some things I could, no I should, share with y’all in hopes that a dinner like last night doesn’t have to happen to you! And by the way, we ended up at Cracker Barrel. Wink! So, here's a start 10 Must Have Kitchen Tips and Tricks!
10 Must Have Tips & Tricks:
Peel your cloves of garlic the easy way. Simply place the clove under a plate or a knife and smash it by pressing on it; then place it in a bowl and shake it; TADA! It’s peeled!
Moving Cutting Boards
Keep your cutting board in place. Do you find that when cutting on a cutting board that slips and slides? Y’all let me tell you, this is no fun and can be dangerous. Simply place a wet paper towel or damp hand towel underneath the board and it will stay in place.
Measuring Sticky Stuff
Measuring sticky stuff? Simply coat your measuring cup with non-stick spray, measure and it will slide right out! Works great with honey, molasses and peanut butter.
Throwing together a big salad? Chop your big pieces of lettuce quickly and easily by cutting them with a pizza cutter. Simply place the lettuce in a large bowl; use the pizza cutter and done!
Don’t throw it away! - To bring honey back to a luscious, drizzly state simply place the honey bear container in a bowl of hot water until the honey is smooth and runny, 5 to 10 minutes.
No More Heat Burns
How do you protect your hands when using a thermometer, simple!: Most thermometers come in a protective plastic sleeve with a metal clip that form a loop at the very top. If you use this clip and sleeve when taking a temperature, you will distance your hand from the heat. Simply slide the probe of the thermometer into the loop at the top of the clip; then hold the plastic sleeve to keep the thermometer upright and lower the probe into the food.
If you like the convenience of pulling out frozen burgers, steaks and so on as you need them then follow this method. Separate chops, steaks and burgers with sheets of parchment paper; place the meat in freezer bags and freeze. The paper makes it much easier to just grab the amount you need and save the rest for later. This is especially nice if you buy in bulk like I do.
Chopped Can Tomatoes
Neatly Chop Canned Tomatoes: I use this for my salsa all of the time. Simply pour the tomatoes into a bowl and use a pastry blender to “chop” them.
Don’t Throw Out a Dull Veggie Peeler
Sharpening A Vegetable Peeler: A paring knife can restore the edge of a dulled peeler. Simply scrape the back side, between the blades, with the back tip (not the cutting side) of a paring knife to remove burrs. Then scrape the front side using the back of the knife’s tip (again the non-cutting side of the knife).
Roll Your Fruit
I use lemons and limes almost daily in my cooking, ice water, sweet tea and so on. So, in order to get the most out of my fruits I find that if you roll while applying a bit of pressure, you will get so much more fresh squeezed juice!
I hope that some of these help you in your daily grind. If you use some of these tips OR have some tips of your own, please share them with me and let me know what you think!
